ENVIRONMENT MINISTER JOINS 'BUCKET BRIGADE' ON B.C. RIVERS DAY
Once a polluted drainage ditch running through Burnaby, Guichon Creek is now home to all sorts of living creatures. On B.C. Rivers Day, Sept. 28, 2008, Environment Minister Barry Penner, centre, helped increase the creek's population by adding some cutthroat trout. He was assisted by Don Wright, left, president of the British Columbia Institute of Technology, and Mark Angelo, an instructor at the school. Students of the BCIT Fish and Wildlife Program and community groups helped Angelo start the process of rehabilitating the stream a few years ago and now it's a symbol of hope for stream remediation projects throughout B.C. Angelo founded B.C. Rivers Day, the largest event of its type in North America. [More photos]

NEW SATELLITE SYSTEM GETS FASTER FLOOD, CLIMATE DATA
VICTORIA – The B.C. government has purchased a new domestic satellite data retrieval system (DOMSAT) that will greatly reduce the time needed to retrieve critical weather, snow and river data used to warn British Columbians about potential flooding, Environment Minister Barry Penner announced.

POLLUTION PREVENTION ORDER ISSUED TO LANGLEY FARM
The Ministry of Environment has issued a Pollution Prevention Order to a mushroom compost and growing facility located at 23751-16th Avenue in Langley, British Columbia, after ministry inspectors concluded it was operating in a manner that is likely to release a substance that will cause pollution.

MAN FINED $10,000 IN BIRD-PARTS TRAFFICKING CASE
VICTORIA – A Brentwood Bay man was fined $10,000 in provincial court for his role in trafficking in protected birds, following an investigation that began in April 2005.

WEST VANCOUVER MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN BEAR CUB KILLING
WHISTLER – A West Vancouver resident has been convicted and fined a total of $3,000 in connection with the illegal shooting of a black bear cub near Whistler Senior Secondary School earlier this year.
