ABORIGINAL RELATIONS
MANDATE |
The Aboriginal Relations strives to foster mutually beneficial working relationships with First Nation communities. Team members act as facilitators between industry and the First Nations. The Branch is responsible for: informing First Nation communities about the oil and gas industry and its regulation; working with the Program Development Branch in creating appropriate legislative and policy frameworks; and representing the interests of the oil and gas sector. OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIES The objective of the Aboriginal Relations and Land Use Branch is to establish a collaborative approach with First Nations. This objective is one of the four key objectives identified by the Oil and Gas Commission. A number of strategies have been identified to meet these objectives:
- Work to establish First Nations Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding as living documents, recognizing that these are only the foundation of a long, collaborative journey with First Nations;
- Conduct consultation and liaison efforts with First Nation communities around oil and gas activity;
- Help facilitate meetings between industry representatives and First Nation Communities;
- Support First Nation community involvement in land use and tenure planning; and
- Provide support to First Nation communities to access the Science and Community Environmental Knowledge Fund.

LAND USE PLANNING
Pre-Tenure Planning
The OGC is participating in oil and gas pre-tenure planning for the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-K).
The Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, is developing pre-tenure plans that are intended to stimulate exploration and development consistent with the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area Act. This Act requires that oil and gas pre-tenures be completed before new oil and gas tenures can be issued in the M-K.
More information on pre-tenure planning, including a map of the M-K area and associated pre-tenure planning areas, can be obtained through the following link:
